Carnival Cruise Line has abruptly announced that they are to cease calling at Antigua.

The cruise line had Antigua as a scheduled port of call on sailings on its Breeze, Legend, Magic, and Pride voyages.

Local news reports quote The Antigua and Barbuda minister of tourism and investment, Max Fernandez by saying “While the island regrets any loss of business, the total number of passengers impacted would be about 12,200, which is a relatively small number of the total cruise passengers that visit our country annually.”

Carnival’s reason is not fully known, but a spokesperson has said “It is moving its ships to destinations that are more welcoming as ‘government officials have taken steps which indicate they don’t want cruise lines and our guests to visit’.
