Viking Sky, the 47,800 gross ton vessel operated by Viking Ocean Cruises has suffered an engine failure off the west coast of Norway.

The ships 1,300 passengers are currently being evacuated following an emergency signal at around 1pm on Saturday.

Viking Sky departed Bergen on a 12 day “Northern Lights” voyage to London Tilbury.

Update: 16.45hrs (Norway)

Local maritime emergency services announced that “5 helicopters and a number of vessels are included in the evacuation of Viking Sky.” They also said approximately 30 people have been brought ashore.

Around 139 passengers have been safely evacuate from the Viking Sky. The Majority of guests on-board are from the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

Sadly, local reports are suggesting that ten passengers are injured, with three in a serious condition.

The evacuation faces further challenges as a rescue cargo ship has also lost power.

The emergency evacuation is expected to continue overnight.
