With more opportunities to travel opening up, the Hotel Bonsol in Palma is certainly one of these places, lovers of the traditional cruise ship experience would enjoy.
Situated in the upscale coastal resort of Illetas, Bonsol Hotel Resort & Spa is close to three small sandy beaches, two trendy beach clubs and several bars and restaurants.
Location aside, there’s plenty to keep you busy at the hotel – tours are even provided to ensure you can find your way down to the two pools, various sundecks and water’s edge restaurant, as well as up to the mini-golf, reading room and heated pool on higher levels.
A good-sized gym and a serene wellness centre with steam room, saunas and relaxation areas are located above the spa, where superb massages, Vichy showers, facials and more are provided. Its Nirvana Spa offers guests great value treatments, with massages available from 65 euros. (much cheaper than the cruise lines)
Tucked away in other corners of the hotel are a table tennis room, volleyball court, squash and tennis courts, and a French boules pitch, pool table and library.
In the peak summer months, the casual beach restaurant offers al fresco seating and a seaside position. However, our favourite was the indoor Las Antorchas restaurant, which offers a selection of traditional and Spanish dishes. A vegetarian menu is also available. The service here is just amazing – so for those who like the Cunard Grille experience, this place is for you, its reminiscent to dining on the QE2!
Dinner at either restaurant is accompanied by live music most nights and, should you wish to carry on the party, after-dinner entertainment is offered in the lounge bar.
The hotel offers various types of room, from twin, double, junior suites and family suites. The rooms are decorated in a classic style with soft furnishings and typical Majorcan furniture – but no two rooms are alike.
All rooms have balconies and partial, if not full, sea views and separate bathrooms with walk-in showers and/or bathtubs. Minibars, kettles, TVs and safes are provided in all rooms. (Top tip, ask for a room on 2nd, 3rd or 4th floor over the lounge bar – views overlook the bay of Palma and feel like sitting on a cruise ship balcony.)
The Hotel Bonsol continues to be run by the same family that founded it in the 1950s. Martin and Lorraine Xamena and family, along with all their staff create a really warm, intimate atmosphere where guests are welcomed like old friends.
The hotel is located just 20-25 minutes from Palma Airport by taxi, it also has a great bus link to downtown Palma for those who want to visit the historic delights of Palma.
